Volvo unveils a new breakthrough with its latest powertrain technology “Drive-E Powertrain” that produces more power, consumes less fuel and less emission at the 35th Bangkok International Motor Show. The new powertrain will be available in S60 T5, Volvo’s popular sporty sedan, and XC60 T5, the luxury crossover for active urban people will be offered for booking order at the event. Also available at the show is a special campaign, “Free Down Payment, Free Interest, Full Safety” for specific models at limited number.

Drive-E Powertrains family was unveiled at the world’s leading motor show early this year and will be shortly available in Thailand in the T5 petrol version with 4 cylinder, turbo charger and 8-speed automatic transmission system. The powertrain, despite its smaller size, can produce impressive power of 220 Hp while consuming 10-30% less fuel.

Chantana Vatanaromya, President of Volvo Car (Thailand) Co Ltd., said, “Drive-E Powertrain is one of the proof of Volvo’s commitment to developing product with higher efficiency while minimizing their impact on the environment. Our engineering team has been working very hard to develop the new powertrain at our own plant. The result is the unique powertrain that better address the needs of current consumers who look for efficiency, fuel economy, lower cost of ownership and less impact on the environment.”

Drive-E Powertrain: downsizing without compromises

Volvo Car Group is highly confident that the focus on 4-cylinder Drive-E powertrains is the right way to create the desirable blend of power, drivability and fuel efficiency. The power received from an engine has nothing to do with its size; it is about the amount of air that flows through it. An engine can be made more efficient if it is smaller. If the air is passed through a smaller engine, then we will get the same power but a better efficiency.

Compared with existing engines with equivalent output, a significant weight saving of between 30kg and 50kg per car can be made.

The sophisticated Drive-E technologies give the customer high performance, improved fuel economy, considerably lower emissions and a powerful sound character. Volvo’s 4-cylinder engines will offer higher performance than today’s 6-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current 4-cylinder generation. Fuel economy savings are anything from 10-30%, depending on which engines are being compared to.

Other improvements to the Drive-E petrol engines include friction-reduction measures such as ball bearings on the camshaft, high-speed continuous variable valve timing and intelligent heat management with a fully variable electric water pump. With less friction, complete combustion and less power loss, the new powertrain produces higher power, becomes more responsive while consuming less fuel and produces less emission.

Eco+ for more fuel efficiency

Eco+ is a function for cars with the automatic gearbox and can reduce fuel consumption by up to 5% depending on the driver’s driving behavior. The function allows the driver to drive the car in a more environmentally conscious manner. While Eco+ is activated, other systems will reduce workload in order to avoid forcing the engine to work at higher load or to prevent engine brake which consumes more fuel. Eco+ includes several sub-functions that boost fuel efficiency. Among others is Eco Coast that helps the driver maintain the car’s kinetic energy when the accelerator pedal is released, at which point engine braking is deactivated and the engine changes down to idling speed.

Drive-E Powertrain in S60 T5 and XC60 T5

The two models to come with Drive-E Powertrain are S60 T5 sporty luxury sedan and XC60 T5 stylish crossover. Both models will be powered by 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharger Drive-E Powertrain that offers the highest power of 220 Hp at 5,500 rpm and the highest torque of 350 Nm at 1,500-4,000 rpm. Both models can also support 95-octane petrol, E10 and E20 fuel.

New 8-speed automatic gearbox

To deliver an increased responsive, smooth and fuel-efficient drive, S60 T5 and XC60 T5 come with 8-speed automatic gearbox. By using eight gears, the engine is allowed to operate at a load where the efficiency is highest. The engine’s speed can be kept low, resulting in low fuel consumption and thus also low CO2 emissions.

The eight gears allows for a wider gear range, the first gear being lower to help acceleration and the top gear being higher to benefit fuel consumption at higher cruising speeds, with the entire range helping to increase drivability. The gear changes themselves have been improved and the speed at which the gears change has also been increased.

In addition, the dynamic chassis has increased drivability and responsiveness.
Attractive look

The two models have increased road presence and refined design with horizontal lines, stylish and sporty silhouette, reflecting the state-of-the-art engine. At the end, the new double integrated pipes have enhanced the modern look. The S60 T5 model also comes in a bolder look with 18-inch wheel with 235/40 R18 tires.

Volvo S60 T5 is available at Baht 2,449,000 and XC60 T5 at Baht 2,919,000.
Full safety

Volvo offers high level of safety with both preventive and protective safety features. Among others are the technologies that significantly reduce risk of frontal crash, whether it is car, bicycle or pedestrian, such as Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake and City Safety. Lane Keeping Aid will warn and vibrate the steering wheel when the car moves out of the lane. Cross Traffic Alert system, meanwhile will alert the driver when another vehicle is approaching from the rear and side when the driver is reversing out of the parking. The two new models also come with a full range of standard Volvo safety features.

Irresistible offer: “Free Down payment, Free Interest, Full Safety”

For customers placing booking order for S80, V60, XC60 and XC90 from now, Volvo offers special campaign “Free Down payment, Free Interest, Full Safety” for limited number only or within 15 April 2014. In addition to such irresistible offer, Volvo customers will also be entitled to FREE maintenance for 5 years or 100,000 km, Volvo Warranty for 3 years or 100,000 km and Volvo Assistance for 3 years.
