Every car battery has a limited lifespan of generally one to two years, depending on user behavior and type of technology. A battery failure is one of the main issues that caused automotive electronics damage or malfunction, resulting in inconveniences to its driver and even safety risks if the vehicle is in the middle of traffic.

"Many statistics point towards battery failure being the top cause of vehicle breakdowns," said Mr. Kuldhaj Bunbongkarn, general manager of Bosch Automotive Aftermarket in Thailand. "Batteries that require frequent maintenance to prolong its lifespan demands driver's time and know-how."

Bosch, a leading supplier of automotive components for the aftermarket, encourages drivers to perform regular battery checks as part of their vehicle inspection routine, and to save on the hassle and cost of battery maintenance by using Bosch sealed maintenance-free (SMF) batteries instead of conventional ones such as dry-charged (DC) or unsealed batteries.

Car batteries that are not sealed require regular maintenance to function and last long. Approximately 50 percent of premature failure of such batteries is caused by water loss due to the lack of maintenance, or evaporation from high under-hood heat – especially common in hot tropical climates such as Thailand's. Bosch offers SMF batteries that are sealed, thus preventing the loss of battery fluid through evaporation and the spillage of battery acid.

Maintaining a full charge is also important for the longevity of a DC battery. "Vehicles with power-hungry electronic devices and running on short distances, especially with short city-driving trips in Bangkok for example, will never achieve a full battery charge. As such, the global trend has been shifting towards batteries that do not require any form of maintenance, not only for their convenience," said Bunbongkarn. "Technological developments over the last 20 years has enabled SMF batteries to support increasingly sophisticated safety, comfort, and navigation systems as well as mobile devices found in vehicles nowadays that cater to the modern lifestyle."

Typically, Bosch SMF batteries have higher cranking power for smoother and faster car starts, as well as recharge faster and have higher charge capacities to handle more loads from electrical devices than comparable conventional batteries. As an industry standard, they are also equipped with indicators to determine whether the battery is at optimum charge or not, as well as when it needs to be replaced. More importantly, Bosch SMF batteries are equipped with a flame arrestor safety feature that prevents external sparks or flames from igniting battery gases.
