Top three Thai candidates win Australian Leadership Award scholarships

Tuesday 26 October 2010 16:01
Australian Ambassador to Thailand James Wise today announced that three Thai students will be offered prestigious Australian Leadership Award (ALA) scholarships.

The successful Thai candidates have been selected from a field of strong candidates and are among 205 ALA Scholarships awarded in 2011.

“These three outstanding people have been identified for their potential to assume leadership roles that can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes in Thailand and the region on their return home,” said the Ambassador.

“These scholars can be justifiably proud of winning a prestigious award that will equip them to serve as future leaders of their field in their country and region, and I congratulate them all.”

Apphan Hayichema, a successful candidate who is a lecturer at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani province, said “This is a golden opportunity for me to acquire knowledge of TESOL and to experience life in Australia. The first priority is exposure to real-world English, which is useful for my current teaching career. Developing leadership skills is also useful for boosting my confidence. I will be part of peacebuilding efforts in southern Thailand by establishing ‘English Centres’ in local communities and even in army bases, from where southern Thais of all ages can learn English for free.”

The other successful candidates are Mr Krisana Eu-ahsunthornwattana, who will study a Masters of International Business at the University of Queensland and Ms Penjai Sinsamersuk, who will study a Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Sydney. Awardees will also participate in a tailored development program during the course of their studies to strengthen leadership skills, establish regional networks and enhance their understanding of regional development challenges.

“The Australia Awards initiative demonstrates Australia’s commitment to developing leadership and building partnerships and linkages within key partner countries, while addressing priority development issues,” said the Ambassador.

ALA scholarships are implemented by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) as part of the Australia Awards initiative. The program develops leadership, builds partnerships and creates enduring linkages between Australia and the recipient countries.
