NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the establishment of NEC Laboratories Singapore (NLS), a sophisticated new research center that capitalizes on the latest safety and big data technologies to provide social infrastructure solutions to markets throughout the world.
The NLS is housed within NEC Asia Pacific, NEC’s Singapore-based regional headquarters for the Asia Pacific region. The NLS is NEC’s fifth research center, following Central Research Laboratories (Japan), NEC Laboratories America, NEC Laboratories Europe and NEC Laboratories China.
“The NLS capitalizes on NEC’s advanced technologies in order to create new value while flexibly engaging in joint research with locally-based partners and proactively participating in a variety of field trials,” said Nobuhiro Endo, president, NEC. “Moreover, the NLS aims to accelerate the time-to-market of new technologies that help contribute to the resolution of a broad range of business and social concerns.”

Singapore’s government and universities are engaged in a variety of projects that seek to resolve a wide range of urban challenges. The NLS aims to produce solutions for these issues by concentrating on areas that include safety, big data, security and smart energy. Furthermore, the NLS works in close cooperation with customers and research institutes, including A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) , the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), in order to fulfill the need for sophisticated social infrastructure in emerging markets throughout Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.
Singapore is a vitally important strategic base for NEC, and where its APAC headquarters was established in 1977. Today, NEC APAC provides key support for sectors such as public safety, IT platforms, network platforms and managed services. NEC APAC also pioneered the use of biometrics for citizen services and immigration control in Singapore in the 1990s. Moreover, it established a Regional Competency Centre in Singapore in April 2010 to spearhead the adoption of public safety solutions in the region. In June 2013, NEC began participating in public safety trials with the Safety and Security Industry Programme Office (SSIPO), jointly established by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Singapore Economic Development Board, as part of contributing further to the country’s public safety field.
In April 2013, NEC announced its “Mid-term Management Plan 2015.” This plan focuses on the company’s “Social Solutions Business” and the provision of advanced social infrastructure utilizing information and communications technologies (ICT) that contribute to the realization of a society that is safe, secure, efficient and fair. Moreover, NEC is focusing on Asia as a starting point for its global business expansion. The establishment of the NLS is one of NEC’s specific measures towards achieving its mid-term management plan.
