UnionPay International is deepening its cooperation with the global tourism industry, making UnionPay the only payment brand in cooperation with the 27th Ministerial Meeting of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) held on June 4 in the Maldives.

To better serve tourists from around the world, UnionPay International has been continuously expanding UnionPay card acceptance at major tourist destinations to provide cardholders with convenient, secure and preferential payment services and card-using privileges.

UnionPay International is also working closely with tourism authorities of countries including Britain, Australia, South Korea and Japan to offer payment services that better meet tourists' needs and promote the development of local tourism industry.

According to the latest data from the Pacific Asia Travel Association, a total of over 550 million tourists visited the Asia Pacific region in 2014, with the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau being the top three tourist sources.

The global Unionpay card acceptance network has expanded to cover more than 150 countries and regions. In the Asia-Pacific region, where UnionPay card services are relatively mature, the UnionPay acceptance coverage can basically meet tourists' payment needs during travel. The cooperation between the tourism industry and UnionPay International is also becoming increasingly close, as more and more local residents prefer to use UnionPay cards for daily consumption and international travels.

In Hong Kong, Macau and Mongolia, UnionPay cards have gained all-round acceptance. In Taiwan, more than 90% of ATMs and over 70% of merchants accept UnionPay cards. In South Korea, almost all signature-based merchants accept UnionPay credit cards and about 1.2 million merchants accept UnionPay cards for PIN-based payment. In Singapore and Thailand, UnionPay cards are accepted by almost all ATMs and over 70% of merchants. And in Australia, UnionPay cards are accepted by 70% of ATMs and about 50% of merchants.

The UNWTO is a specialized agency of the United Nations and is the leading international organization in the field of tourism. It is aimed at promoting the development of the tourism industry and facilitating economic development and exchanges between countries.

At the end of last year, UnionPay International signed an MOU with the UNWTO and agreed to carry out worldwide cooperation through sharing resources and complementing each other's advantages so as to improve the payment convenience and spending experience of UnionPay cardholders in tourist destinations.
