About The Whiffenpoofs
Every year, 14 talented Yale men are selected to join The Whiffenpoofs , the world’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group. Founded in 1909, "The Whiffs" began as a senior quartet that met for weekly concerts at Mory’s Temple Bar, the famous Yale Tavern. The Whiffenpoof Song, the group’s signature ballad, gained nationwide recognition when Rudy Vallée recorded a solo version in 1937. The song would later become one of the popular tunes of World War II. Later on, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, and many other artists followed suit with their own recordings.
Today, the group has become one of Yale’ s most celebrated and hallowed traditions, maintaining a performance schedule of over 200 concerts annually in addition to recording an album and embarking on a three-month world tour.
In recent years, the Whiffenpoofs have performed for the likes of presidents Obama, Clinton, Bush II, Bush I, Mother Theresa and the Dalai Lama, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Rose Bowl, and for events and programs such as the World Series, Saturday Night Live, The West Wing, NBC’s The Sing-OFF, and Fox’s Glee.
