The event included the traditional British graduation ceremony, formal graduate and VIP processions and professional photography and an evening reception. Thai students who graduated from UK universities since 1995 were honoured during the ceremony. The graduates had a chance to wear and be photographed in their university cap and gown during the ceremony and enjoyed the photo session with their families and friends. The closing ceremony was accompanied by traditional Scottish bag pipes.
Graduation UK is part of the GREAT Britain campaign that aims to promote British culture and education globally.
Mark Kent, British Ambassador to Thailand, said:
'The UK and Thailand have a strong link in education. The UK is the chosen destination for many wishing to attend university – almost 5,000 Thai students went to study in the UK last year. The British government every year offers Chevening Scholarships – fully-funded Master's degree programme scholarships for future Thai leaders. This Graduation UK ceremony is a positive proof of the academic success and how UK universities are popular among Thai nationals.'
Andrew Glass, Country Director of British Council Thailand, said:
'In order to increase global partnerships and networks between universities, students, practitioners and higher education leaders, the British Council will continue to celebrate, as we had on Saturday evening, the quality, experience and benefits of UK higher education, and create a clear and compelling offer for our future global leaders. UK alumni are crucial to our work and we will be arranging a series of activities throughout the year to support UK alumni in Thailand through networking and professional development opportunities.'
Thanyakamon Limakunawoot, King's College London graduate, said:
'I would like to thank the British Embassy Bangkok and the British Council Thailand for bringing the Graduation UK here, letting me have an opportunity to attend the prestigious graduation ceremony and wearing the King's College London gown. It was so special for me and my family to share this honourable moment together.'
