On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which is celebrated on 10 December every year, the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand in cooperation with the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection of the Ministry of Justice today held a charity run entitled 'Run4Rights, Where Every Step Matters!' to raise public awareness about human rights.

The event took place at Lumpini Park, in downtown Bangkok. Part of the proceeds from the run were donated to two charities, Ramathibodi Foundation and Thailand Association of the Disabilities.

"The European Union is founded on a strong engagement to promote and protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law. From the very beginning, we have made the protection of human rights not only the foundation of our common internal and external policies, but of our Union itself," said Mrs Luisa Ragher, Charge d'Affaires a.i. of the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand.

She also pointed out that human rights are relevant to everyone and that they reflect the minimum standards and means necessary for people to live with dignity. "To mark this special day, the International Human Rights Day, we shall remember that we need to stand up for our own rights and those of others. We can take action in our own daily lives, to uphold the rights that protect us all." Mrs Ragher added.

Over a thousand runners from all walks of life gathered at Lumpini Park early in the morning to take part in the 5 km Fun Run or 10.5 km Mini Marathon, or to cheer for their family and friends. With a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, the event succeeded in imparting the message on the importance of respecting human rights and in raising awareness on getting involved in rights-related programmes and causes.

Ms Pitikan Sithidej, Director General of the Department of Rights and Liberty Protection, Ministry of Justice, was also present to grace the occasion.

"'Run4Rights, Where Every Step Matters' is an excellent reminder of our commitment to ensure the basic freedom of all people and to protect their human rights. We are very proud to be part of this initiative that is also charitable in nature," said Ms Pitikan.

"Thailand was among the first 48 countries to endorse the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. To date, we have joined many international human rights treaties which aim to promote, protect and focus on fundamental rights for all people. Aside from raising awareness on the importance of International Human Rights Day, this charity run also enhances generosity and enables fellow human beings to have fundamental rights without discrimination." she added.

Once the runners had crossed the finish line, Mrs Luisa Ragher and Ms Pitikan Sithidej, Director General of the Department of Rights and Liberty Protection, Ministry of Justice thanked the public for their attendance and participation. They also distributed special prizes and turned over the donations to Mr Suchart Owatwunasakul, Deputy President of Thailand Association of the Disabilities and Prof. Dr. Pornchai Simaroja, representative of Ramathibodi Foundation.
