DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, has collaborated with Strom, a leading manufacturer, distributor and solution provider for e-mobility, to become the first logistics provider in Thailand to use electric motorbikes for first and last-mile services. From July 1, 2020, the first 50 electric motorbikes will be based at five DHL Express Service Centers and used to transport documents and small parcels throughout Don Muang, Rama 9, Rama 3, Bangkae and Bangna.

DHL Express Thailand has worked with Strom to develop and deploy electric motorbikes with the aim of enhancing energy efficiency and reducing its carbon footprint, especially in Bangkok’s congested areas. Fully charged in five hours, the electric motorbikes have a range of up to 115 kilometers and have the highest speed of 85 kilometers/ hour. They contribute zero pollutants in all dimensions; smoke, smell and noise as they use 100% electrical systems. These electric vehicles also help decrease carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to planting 10,000 trees each year.

Herbert Vongpusanachai, Managing Director at DHL Express Thailand & Head of Indochina, said, “DPDHL Group’s mission is to connect people and improve lives, and we believe we have a special responsibility to our employees, society and the environment. Our environmental protection program GoGreen is an expression of this strong sense of responsibility. We are proud to be a leader in green logistics, and to be the very first international express delivery service provider in Thailand to use electric motorbikes for pick-up and delivery routes within the country. We are committed to developing innovative solutions that will help us achieve our goal of reducing all logistics-related emissions to zero by 2050.”

Siwawate Hongnakorn, Vice President of Operations, DHL Express Thailand, added, “This is only the first step in our plan to fully replace existing gasoline-powered motorbikes with electric motorbikes. These help us to better manage our carbon footprint while reducing our fleet maintenance costs in a sustainable manner. At the same time, our couriers also feel proud to contribute to environmental protection by being on a green ride each day.”

Keith Hodgson, General Manager, Strom (Thailand) Co. Ltd, said, “Strom, an Electric Vehicle pioneer in Thailand, has produced a bespoke, zero-emissions solution for the last-mile delivery sector. In the last two years, we have worked alongside DHL Express to bring this concept to reality and we are proud to be their partners in the achievement of this green logistics milestone.”

Thailand is one of the countries most affected by climate change and its greenhouse gas emissions contribute 0.86% to global emissions[1]. The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) encourages private companies to cut GHG emissions in an effort to reduce the country’s emissions by 7-20% within 2020. Thailand has set a long term reduction target of 20-25%, or at least 111 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, by 2030[2].

This initiative is part of DPDHL Group’s GoGreen environmental protection program to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and local air pollutants. By the year 2050, the Group expects to reduce all logistics-related emissions to zero globally. DHL Express Thailand has so far reduced CO2 emissions by 60 tons this year, or equivalent to planting 6,000 trees.
