SET and alliances initiate Care the Wild “Plant & Protect” platform in compliance with good governance practice

BANGKOK, September 9, 2020 - The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), jointly with all alliances, today launches its Care the Wild “Plant & Protect” project to fight against climate change and environmental issues. The project is aimed to increase forest areas and monitor the plant growth through “Care the Wild” application in compliance with good governance principles regarding information disclosure to monitor, learn, and nurture. This environmental initiative aims to build a balanced ecosystem in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals implementation. SET has set a one-year target to complete 500 rai of trees planting to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 900,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents per year.

SET President Pakorn Peetathawatchai said SET is committed to managing environmental issues through the 'SET Social Impact’ platform development. To achieve the goal, Care the Wild “Plant & Protect” project has been initiated. This collaboration platform with the Plant & Protect elephant mascot logo aims to create environmental sustainability by expanding forest areas through fundraising mechanism to plant new and replaced trees while promoting tree nurture accelerated by a strong cooperation network of both public and private sectors. The project welcomes all relevant parties to learn and understand the ecosystem of plants, animals, and environment inclusively and help raise funds to successfully plant trees, while the protect part is truly based on good governance practice as the fund raisers can monitor the tree growth and community activities throughout 6 years, involve in community development and nurture the donated trees to expand the forests via 'Care the Wild’ application.

The Royal Forest Department under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and related public agencies have carefully selected 717 rai of community forests in 7 provinces to participate in this project, consisting of Baan Khao Hua Kon community forest, Ratchaburi province; Baan Pu Tum community forest, Phetchaburi province; Baan Mai community forest, Chiang Rai province; Baan Na Wai community forest, Nan province; Baan Nong Ping community forest, Kanchanaburi province; Baan Koke Luang community forest, Nakhorn Ratchasima province; and Baan Nong Tit Sorn community forest, Maha Sarakham province. Each area of community forests has a unique ecosystem and diverse community development. The business partners can select a variety of plantation areas for their sponsorship and take part in community development as well as learning about the ecosystem management along with villagers.

“Through this business partnership, Care the Wild project has a target of 500-rai plantation (100,000 trees) initially over a one-year period. The afforestation will to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 900,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents per year in return. The project partners are able to not only help tackle the global warming, but also be engaged in sustainable community development,” added Pakorn.

Currently, Bank of Ayudhaya, Association of Investment Management Companies, Association of Thai Securities Companies, Custodian Club, Securities Operations Club, Thailand Securities Depository Co., Ltd. (TSD) and Thailand Clearing House Co., Ltd. (TCH) join Care the Wild project.
