Polycom Helps China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Streamline Operations, Improve Productivity and Save in Travel Costs with the Polycom? RealPresence? Platform

Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), the global leader in standards-based unified communications (UC), announced that China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) recently deployed Polycom’s comprehensive UC video solutions, including the Polycom? RealPresence? Platform, to speed development of its large-scale projects and conferences, in particular for the management reform, evaluation and review of MOST’s 175 strategic 2011/2012 research projects and initiatives. Polycom High-Definition (HD) video and telepresence systems are rapidly becoming a cost-effective solution for government departments of all sizes to accelerate the delivery of large-scale administrative projects.

MOST’s large-scale video network consists of 10 meeting rooms for experts and single system control rooms in Beijing, as well as 25 video meeting rooms distributed in 20 provinces across the country, providing a truly immersive and life-like experience for 175 multi-media conferences. At the same time, in order to enable a seamless transition and smooth delivery of such large-scale, high-frequency meeting sessions, Polycom prepared a number of emergency support solutions for MOST as back-up support.

Prior to deploying the Polycom solution, department personnel were required to travel to MOST’s headquarters in Beijing to participate in the review process and meet with review panels to assess the applications for research projects and initiatives resulting in weeks, sometimes months, of downtime and significant travel costs. Now, with an advanced UC video solution at the heart of its operations, MOST has been able to successfully complete the review process of its science and technology and R&D projects in four days, conducting 175 meetings over video, with an average of 44 sessions a day, resulting in streamlined processes, improved efficiency and productivity, and significant travel savings to the amount of $US320,000.

“The Polycom RealPresence Platform is highly efficient delivering rapid cost savings and fundamentally changing the traditional methods of face-to-face review and assessment processes. We benefited from a large- scale video network connecting participants in over 20 provinces dispersed across the country, providing a reliable guarantee for 175 multi-media conferences," said China Ministry of Science and Technology.

"High-definition telepresence solutions are changing our customers’ traditional ways of meeting and collaborating,” said Steven Li, Vice President and General Manager of Polycom China. “Polycom’s immersive telepresence solutions and RealPresence Platform create a path for MOST to accelerate approval processes and make important decisions in a much quicker and more efficient manner.”
