News facts:
  • Swedish real estate company Akademiska Hus selects Fujitsu to provide a cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) solution to support growth, modernize its offices and drive down energy costs
  • Real estate firm planning to use its new infrastructure to analyze IoT data and provide property owners with energy saving solutions
  • Low-risk approach will result in fast-track delivery and rapid implementation of IT production environment

One of Sweden's largest real estate companies, Akademiska Hus, has selected Fujitsu to develop a cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure solution to digitalize its office environment, support growth and reduce energy costs for customers. The property group will implement Fujitsu PRIMEFLEX for VMware Cloud Foundation, a highly-scalable IT architecture which combines the high performance and energy efficiency of Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers with the flexibility and scalability of VMWare's integrated hybrid cloud platform.

Recognizing that its rapid expansion had outgrown its previous IT capabilities, Akademiska Hus decided to upgrade its IT infrastructure to support its ongoing expansion and to create a modern, activity-based working environment enabling employees to work flexibly, including access to corporate systems from remote locations. Smart systems will be deployed to manage room bookings and office systems such as lighting and ventilation, while embedded sensors will immediately flag any technical failures and automatically send maintenance requests. These features will deliver cost savings, however the property group also plans to generate new revenues by harnessing and mining the large pool of properties' energy efficiency-related information as the basis for developing future power-saving solutions that it can offer commercially.

Fujitsu PRIMEFLEX for VMware Cloud Foundation delivers a software-defined data center (SDDC) with scale-out IT architecture and hybrid IT capability. It comprises Fujitsu's PRIMERGY server hardware and VMware's new Cloud Foundation platform and is designed to simplify the management and provisioning of software-defined compute, network, storage and application services at scale across hybrid cloud environments to accommodate further growth. This solution is proving popular with customers thanks to this ability to easily add storage capacity to cope with growing demand.

System implementation at Akademiska Hus is currently underway. Once complete, the real estate group will be able to choose the most cost-effective combination of public cloud, private cloud or on-premises infrastructure. The hardware and software in Akademiska Hus's solution was pre-integrated at Fujitsu's smart factory in Augsburg, Germany, resulting in faster delivery and ensuring rapid implementation of its production environment.

Per Brantsing Karlsson, CIO at Akademiska Hus, says: "Successful digital transformation requires embracing new technologies. For Akademiska Hus, we see the biggest business opportunities in leveraging data from the IoT. Energy optimization has long been a priority for us, but to make progress with this, we needed to further develop our infrastructure. Fujitsu PRIMEFLEX for VMware Cloud Foundation was a logical step considering the combined expertise from Fujitsu and VMware, experts in hardware and software development, and gives us access to real-time information derived from some 1.3 billion data points. This new architecture not only improves our day to day operations today but will provide the flexibility and scalability we need to roll out new value-adding services for our customers in the future."

Akademiska Hus also expects to create new business opportunities by providing third-party access to real-time data, connected via open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Customers, energy agencies and researchers gain access to quality-assured real-time data, to help develop new services for the property group, such as energy optimization. Akademiska Hus already works closely with Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, which runs several projects in this area.

Karin Schreil, CEO at Fujitsu Sweden says: "Akademiska Hus is a great example of a company that is using growth as an opportunity to create transformational, strategic advantages. By building new SDDC infrastructure to support its growth, it also gains adaptability, and can harness the greater volume of data created by IoT to uncover new opportunities. We're also seeing more and more customers selecting integrated systems as the fastest, lowest-risk route to build new infrastructure, and we expect this growing trend to continue."
