BKNIX Takes Lead Discussion in Strategic Plan to Push Forward Thailand to Neutral Internet Exchange Hub

THNIC Foundation and BKNIX Co.,Ltd. held the 3rd BKNIX Peering Forum 2018 with important agenda to discuss strategic plan for Thailand to become hub of the Neutral Internet Exchange in Greater Mekong Sub region.

THNIC Foundation and BKNIX Co.,Ltd. who run the first and only Neutral Internet Exchange of Thailand held the 3rd BKNIX Peering Forum 2018 during 22-23 May 2018 at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok to open opportunity to meet and exchange knowledge between the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and exchange information from local and international.

"This year is the 30th anniversary of .th, thus we would like to take this opportunity in organizing events to benefits to public, especially to Thai Internet Community continuously. Starting from last March we successfully held a seminar on "Living with disruption: Impact of Blockchain on Business". Follow by this "BKNIX Peering Forum 2018" which is also a part of the 30th anniversary of .th. The upcoming seminar is "Thai On-Line" to be held in mid June and many more later this year" said Dr. Gothom Arya, Chairman of THNIC Foundation.

"I am pleased to see BKNIX Peering Forum is still a platform that has attracted the attention from service providers such as Internet Service Providers, Content Providers, Data Center providers, Carrier providers and Internet Exchange providers. This year we have over 140 participants from 15 countries", Dr. Arya added.

Prof. Kanchana Kanchanasut, vice chairperson of THNIC Foundation and the Internet pioneer who honorary received the Internet Hall of Fame from Internet Society and honorary received the Jonathan B. Postel award presented to an individual that has made outstanding contributions in service to the data communications community, as well as the push of BKNIX project to established. Prof. Kanchana said that "With geographic location of Thailand in addition to having the neutral Internet Exchange like BKNIX has made Thailand suitable to be hub in exchanging information in this region which should have promotions and push from all sectors. This is to increase competitive potential over all for the Greater Mekong Sub region. Having the exchange point within the region, no need to exchange in the country far away. This will result in lower cost of the Internet service in the region which will be beneficial to the Internet users to be able to access the Internet with low-cost. As a result, the internet penetration rate of people in the region will be increased".

There are several topics of interest in the BKNIX Peering Forum 2018, including Panel discussion on Strategy for Thailand to become a regional IX hub, Network Infrastructure for IOT, Content Peering and Internet Ecosystem and other topics. Guest speakers and invited speakers are specialist from local and international such as Philip Smith (NSRC), Matt Jansen (Facebook), Lt. Dr. Jesada Sivaraks (former secretary to Vice Chairman, NBT), Champika Wijayatunga (ICANN), etc.

In addition to knowledge exchange from the speakers, the event provided opportunities and meeting points for collaboration discussion amount the participants. Most of participants are ISPs, CDNs, IDCs, Carrier, IXPs and other related providers from both Thailand and other countries as follow: Afganistan, Australia, Bolivia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, USA, etc. They are people in communication and internet industry around 150 person.

BKNIX Peering Forum 2018 are sponsored by variety of organizations as follow: APNIC, ARISTA, Facebook, Huawei, Netflix, TCC Technology, 3BB, AWS, ICANN, INET, ISOC, NTT Communications, Throughwave, THNIC and NSRC. All participants had changes to meet with representatives from these organization at the event.
