CAC Telecom: Thailand-Hong Kong Marine Cable Expected to be Ready for Commercial Use in 2020

After the signing of the Principles and Terms Sheet with CAT Thailand last August 25, China Aviation Cloud (CAC) Telecom announced that the Thailand-Hong Kong Marine Cable is expected to be ready for commercial use by the end of 2020.

During the 4th Asia-Pacific Submarine Networks Forum held in Shenzhen (China) last August 29, Mr. Bill Lee, Vice President of CAC Telecom, said, "We are proud to cooperate with the Thai government and CAT operator to build the Thailand-Hong Kong cable system, which will expand regional network connectivity for Thailand."

Under the theme "Innovation Driving Future Submarine Networks", the event was jointly organized by Huawei Technologies, Huawei Marine Networks, and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

During the forum, Mr. Lee presented some of the highlights of the Thailand-Hong Kong Cable system project:
  • Express routes design with the lowest latency: Comparing with existing cables, 13% route length reduced and 5ms saving in latency between Hong Kong and Bangkok
  • Datacenter initiative with all landing country: terrestrial datacenters to help global users to expand service reach
  • Latest & Leading technology: 200G * 96WL per fiber pair; 8 fiber pairs 153.6T design capacity in total; redundancy design is adopted in all key components
  • Flexible future extension capability: 5 ROADM Bus reserved for flexible future extension to the countries along the route
  • Open system

With 95% of international data communications carried out by submarine cables, cooperation among the countries is necessary for the interconnection of ICT infrastructure, which will benefit the development of the global economy.

Mr. Mao Shengjiang, COO of Huawei Marine explained, "With the rise and application of regional data centers, cloud computing, 4K/8K video, 5G and Internet of Things, the global bandwidth consumption of submarine cables has grown rapidly. Many countries, such as Thailand, have introduced policies to support the development of the submarine cable industry, and are building regional ICT Hubs."

Advanced subsea connectivity enables transformation to a digital economy as well. Mr. Ian Redpath, Principal Analyst with Ovum, a market-leading data, research and consulting business focused on digital, said, "Basic connectivity is a first step towards a goal of hub connectivity. Leading cities are country gateways connected to the global mesh; the growth of the digital economy will drive network investment."

In addition, Huawei Marine announced during the forum that it has built a total of 50,361 km of submarine cables, delivered 90 projects, reached 75 countries, over the past 10 years since it was founded. Huawei Marine has also signed a cooperation agreement with CAC telecom.

Huawei Marine has successfully been hosting the Asia-Pacific Submarine Network Forum since 2015. This annual event facilitates high-quality discussions and provides a networking platform for the industry, where experts discuss and share their knowledge of current developments, future trends and advanced technologies. Over 300 experts from Asia Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe attended this year's forum.
