Bangkok--11 Jul--HK Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA)

The Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the development of wireless technology and applications in Hong Kong, today announced the latest results of the "Hong Kong Mobile Apps Industry Survey", which found that apart from Android and iOS, more companies surveyed are also expanding their scope of business to HTML5 apps and mini programs in social media apps than two years before. At the same time, the survey reported significant improvement in business climate for the industry.

Organised by WTIA and sponsored by CreateHK of the HKSAR Government, the Survey is one of the activities of the "Asia Smart App Awards 2018/2019" project. Conducted independently by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), it aims to explore the current market situation and prospects of the local mobile apps industry. Through online questionnaires and telephone interviews, the SU successfully interviewed 100 local mobile apps companies from April to May this year.

The Survey has identified three key factors that warrant in-depth discussion among the industry:
  • Over 65% of interviewees cited a lack of talent to remain their biggest problem in operating an apps company. 73% of smart apps companies consist of both male and female employees, with a gender ratio of seven men to three women. The industry should encourage more women to join the trade.
  • Average salaries of app developers have increased substantially, with 69% now earning a monthly salary of HK$ 20,000 to HK$ 39,999, compared to only 43% in 2017. The proportion of companies with revenue over 2 million dollars also rose from 30% to 42%, reflecting a significant improvement in business environment. 30% of them have managed to make a profit, up from 20% two years ago.
  • HTML5 apps and mini program in social media apps are becoming an emerging development trend for the industry. Some companies have already deemed the duo as the most important business development platforms, second only to the leading Android and iOS mobile platforms. In addition, the proportion of apps developers dedicated to Android apps is catching up with those dedicated to iOS apps, with both groups accounting for 49% of the interviewees respectively.

Mr. Roy Law, Chairman of WTIA, said: "The survey is of valuable reference to the industry, giving powerful insights regarding the fast-growing mobile apps industry, to deal with challenging situations in the technology section and maintain highly sensitive to the opportunities for the year ahead. At the same time, the survey found that talent shortage remains the biggest issue in business expansion. In addition, with HTML5 apps and mini programs in social media apps rapidly gaining prominence in the market over the past two years, businesses may consider strengthening their efforts in this part of the market."

Mr. Edmond Lai, Chief Digital Officer of HKPC, said, "The use of mobile phone is not limited to our daily lives, as 'BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device)' becomes more popular among businesses. It has fuelled rising demand for mobile apps for business purposes and created new opportunities for apps developers."

The Survey is a highlight of the "Asia Smart App Awards 2018/2019" project which also includes the Asia Smart App Awards Demo Day, Summit cum Awards Ceremony held on 20 June, training workshops and local IT company visit.
