Mooncakes have always been a big part of Chinese history, and have continued throughout the years to be a tradition of the mid-autumn festival. The Mooncake custom began about 1,000 years ago, and the high-ranking officials of the Sung dynasty in China were the first to celebrate the mooncake festival. During that time, the people exchanged gifts like round mirrors and dew-receiving basins which symbolised a greeting of “roundness” or complete success in all undertakings, good health and the “removal of the dew” which caused backaches and rheumatism. From this, the tradition of the first mooncake was borne and the celebration from then on has included these festive sweets which are now known the world over.
