Bangkok--27 May--AirAsia
The World’s Best Low-Cost Airline has given Bangkok its full support as the Thai capital revives its travel and tourism industry.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes and Thai AirAsia CEO Tassapon Bijleveld told Thai and foreign media in a press conference today that the airline is committed to helping Bangkok attract tourists and reclaim its position as one of the world’s tourism capitals.

The AirAsia heads spoke in a press conference at Novotel Suvarnabhumi Bangkok.

Fernandes said that AirAsia will very aggressively market Bangkok as well as its other Thai destinations with low fares and attractive promotions.   Tourism receipts contribute heavily to Thailand’s economic health.

“AirAsia is an ASEAN airline, and we feel duty-bound to support the various communities of the region, Thailand included.   The ASEAN region is our home, and so we’re putting 110% effort to help Thailand bounce back.   This support from AirAsia extends across the entire group,” Fernandes said.

Tassapon added, “Bangkok is resilient, and the city is going to bounce back.   We’re working hard with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to reposition Bangkok as a major tourist attraction.   We’re confident that the travel and tourism industry will get better from here.”

Thailand is a popular destination for AirAsia guests.   The airline has two hubs – Bangkok and Phuket – in the country.   Aside from Bangkok, other very popular Thai cities are Phuket, a perennial favorite among both Thai and foreign travelers; Chiang Mai, popularly known as “The Rose of the North”; Krabi, a famous diving destination; and Surat Thani, the jump off point to the party island Koh Samui.

AirAsia began operations in Thailand in February 2004.   It currently has 11 destinations in Thailand, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Phuket, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani.   Bangkok is the airline’s most popular destination in Thailand, with the capital connected with direct flights to 10 other Thai cities and to 14 cities elsewhere in Asia.

AirAsia has tirelessly championed the ASEAN region, where AirAsia is based, as a premier travel and tourism destination.     AirAsia has created “sky bridges” that link the communities of ASEAN and that link the region to many more cities in Asia, Australia and Europe.   AirAsia’s “sky bridges,” utilized by more than 92 million guests to date, have greatly contributed to the economic growth and social integration in the region.

AirAsia operates with the slogan Now everyone can fly.   In eight years, AirAsia grew from an airline with two aircraft, one destination and 250 employees to an airline with 92 aircraft, approximately 70 destinations and a staff of 7,000.   AirAsia is now widely regarded as THE ASEAN airline, and it is the largest and most successful low-cost airline in Asia.
