Bangkok--11 Oct--MSLGROUP

Fifty years ago, on 25 March 1965, the story of "Nile Tilapia" began when the emperor Akihito, who at that time was the crown prince of Japan, gifted 50 freshwater fish of the Tilapia species to His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His Majesty the late king named this type of fish "Pla Nil" in Thai which means black-colored. The name is short, with clear meaning, and is easy for people to remember. Intending for Thais to have affordable access to high protein food for nutritious consumption, His Majesty offered guidelines in breeding and conserving Nile Tilapia species from his own experience of raising the fish. Most importantly, freshwater fish was His Majesty's selection of choice, as they can be farmed and raised in any part of the country, in order for Thais to live a sufficient and sustainable life: have careers; increase their income; and be able to take care of their families.

Despite the fact that Thais' "Father" is no longer with us, His Majesty's love will forever remain in our hearts. To commemorate the Royal Grace of His Majesty the late King, SEA LIFE Bangkok is exhibiting the Nile Tilapia of the Chitralada strain, the fish given by His Majesty King Rama IX for Thais to make a living of and for their own consumption. The exhibition also covers the story of "Nile Tilapia…Fish of the King", presented in the form of a Smart Film. The film will appear on large tilapia tanks for visitors to learn about the story of the fish that His Majesty had granted the Thais for their sustainable living.
