The panel discussion, held as part of the Sustrends 2025 event, welcomed representatives from each of the project partners, along with a representative from the Ban Limthong Community—one of the RAKNAM sites. The panelists shared insights on best practices around water management, the transformative initiative, and the positive effects of implementing more sustainable water management, which has been running continuously for over 17 years.
Recognizing the essential of water, supporting water security is a key priority for The Coca-Cola Company globally and locally. With a presence in more than 200 countries and territories, the company's 2030 Water Security Strategy focuses on accelerating action to increase water security worldwide.
Mr. Sarut Wittayarungruangsri, Senior Director of Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability, Coca-Cola Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, stated "Coca-Cola recognizes that water is essential for our planet's ecosystem. For the past 17 years the 'RAKNAM' project has been supported via our philanthropic partners, including The Coca-Cola Foundation and The Coca-Cola Foundation Thailand, in partnership with non-profit organizations as well as local communities. Its success has been empowered communities to independently manage, conserve, and develop water resources in six provinces across Thailand, and this year the project is including three new sites in Maha Sarakham, Phetchabun, and Krabi."
Many of these provinces are commonly impacted by water challenges such as flooding, or droughts and water management plans have helped them better prepare for this impact. For example, in Ban Limthong, the local community formed a group to help manage water resources by creating public sources, dredging canals, and aligning crops with water availability. These actions helped boost the amount of water available for agriculture, enabled the cultivation of a variety of crops, and created jobs. While the program in the Ban Limthong community ended in 2023, the sustainable solutions implemented have continued to have a positive impact. The learnings have helped shape other RAKNAM locations - such as the village of Phetchabun, a program that started in 2024.
Dr. Royol Chitradon, Director and Secretary General of Utokapat Foundation under Royal Patronage of H.M. the King, said "The Utokapat Foundation is committed to promoting sustainable water management through our 'RAKNAM' project. We empower communities, particularly those beyond traditional irrigation systems, to adapt and achieve sustainable water management based on the philosophy of H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Recognizing the escalating impact of climate change on Thailand's water resources, 'RAKNAM' fosters community resilience through collaborative solutions, including establishing water reserves and promoting sustainable farming practices like the New Theory of Agriculture. The success of Ban Limthong community exemplifies this approach. The Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII) has played a pivotal role, equipping the community with geographic information system tools and training. This has enabled them to map, develop, and distribute water resources more effectively throughout the community using gravity-based systems. They've also implemented crop calendars that optimize water usage for agriculture. The positive effects in Ban Limthong extend far beyond water security. The project has generated new income opportunities, fostered family unity by reduced migration, and stands as a beacon of hope for other communities. Looking ahead, we see immense potential in leveraging AI to further empower communities in managing water resources, agriculture, and marketing, further inspiring wider adoption of these sustainable practices."
Adopting innovative solutions in water management, RAKNAM project in Khon Kaen province stands another successful site.
Mr. Mechai Viravaidya, Founder and Chairman of Population and Community Development Association (PDA), shared, "PDA focuses on strengthening communities, recognizing that water is a vital resource for sustaining community livelihoods. We have been exploring new development approaches that lead to successful solutions for water issues. The 'Clean Water for Communities' project supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation as part of the 'RAKNAM' project in Khon Kaen, exemplifies this approach and has helped improve water accessibility in the community, addressing critical shortages and enhancing the quality of life for villagers. By installing advanced water systems like the Solar Powered Water System (SPWS) and Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) System, the project promotes environmental sustainability and empowers communities with renewable energy solutions. The initiative has also empowered local communities to take ownership of the project, fostering community engagement and investment in clean energy and optimal water resource management, supporting resilience in historically drought-prone areas. This success further highlights how effective community engagement, and tailored solutions can lead to more sustainable outcomes and serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges."
Building on the success in Khon Kaen province, the RAKNAM site in Maha Sarakham and Krabi, launched in 2024, has adopted the model to address the local water challenges and ensure long-term, sustainable, community-led water management.
The Coca-Cola system in Thailand, along with its partners, remain focused on working towards more sustainable water management practices. For more information on the 'RAKNAM' project and ongoing water management initiatives, please visit Coca-Cola Thailand's website
