Linshu Wickerwork Revitalizes Ancient Craft for Global Markets

"Chinese wickerwork surpasses other countries and regions, Shandong wickerwork surpasses other provinces, and Linshu wickerwork surpasses all." Linshu County, known for its long history of willow cultivation and processing, has been famous for its wickerwork since the Tang Dynasty. Residents of Liuzhuang Village weaved willow from the Shu River into practical items like baskets and containers, which became integral to local culture due to their economic, eco-friendly, and aesthetic qualities.

Over time, wickerwork evolved from a domestic craft into a significant industry. In the early years of the People's Republic of China, Linshu County actively promoted this sector, and in 1973, its wickerwork products were included in the first national export plan, turning a common household activity into a key source of foreign exchange. Wickerwork has become an important means for Linshu farmers to find employment and increase their income.

Today, Linshu County has 100,000 mu of willow cultivation and 50,000 households involved in the wickerwork sector, which spans all nine towns and streets. Leading enterprises include Ronghua, Meiyi, and Qinglang, with several designated as key national cultural export enterprises for 2023-2024. Additionally, 13 willow weaving companies, such as Qinglang and Zhaoxing, were recognized as key cultural product and service export enterprises by Shandong Province for 2019-2020, representing one-fifth of the province's certified firms.

To support local businesses and boost incomes, Linshu County established the Wickerwork Craft Association and actively promotes its international presence by organizing delegations to over 10 major global trade exhibitions annually, such as the Canton Fair and Ambiente. Consequently, Linshu's wickerwork products are now exported to over 120 countries and regions.
